The UEFA European under-19 championship is one of the oldest and most prestigious competitions for young players who are between the ages of 18 and 19 or maybe lower if they can play at the level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the legendary U-18 tournament to the modern U-19 format.<\/b><\/h3>\n

When the tournament first started, it was called the FIFA International Youth Tournament back then in 1948.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It later became the UEFA European Under-18 Championship from 1981 to 2001 and at the time it was Spain, England, and France that were the dominant teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was in 2002 that UEFA now raised the age limit to become for U-19 and the organization was now held every two years. This was during the time where FIFA now adopted the format of an 8-team final round (2002\u20132015) and they now expanded into 16 teams from 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

UEFA European Under-19 Championship: Legends Emerge<\/b><\/h3>\n

Most of the biggest stars of the 1995 to 2005 generation have gone on to win the tournament and to shine in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You will remember names like:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Paul Pogba who won the tournament with France in 2010<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Kylian Mbapp\u00e9 with France in 2016\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Jo\u00e3o F\u00e9lix with Portugal 2018\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Pedri & Gavi in 2019 with Spain\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Jude Bellingham runner-up with England in 2022\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Lamine Yamal in 2024 with Spain.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You will notice that the list of top scorers and the best players of the tournaments will include the list of winners that will clinch the prestigious Ballon d’Or.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    UEFA European Under-19 Championship organizational mechanism<\/b><\/h2>\n

    There are some elements to the under-19 tournament that we can discuss or talk about today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    A grueling three-stage qualifying round.<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Unlike the U-21 tournament, the U-19 is different and it has three qualifying rounds and this is something that makes the finals to be challenging and it needs teams to be consistent with their performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The qualifying round begins in September and November of the previous year and there are 52 teams that are going to play the rounds which are put into 13 groups where there are 4 teams each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Elite rounds take place between March and April of the same year as the tournament takes place. 28 teams are those that will have qualified from the preliminary round and 2 seeded teams which are put in 7 groups of 4 teams each.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Then there is the final round with 7 teams that finished first in the Elite Round + the host country.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In total, a team has to win at least 9 to 10 matches in the 18 months that all these qualifying rounds will run for them to make it to the championship\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    New final round format and schedule from 2024\u20132025<\/b><\/h3>\n

    From the 2024 season and 2025 season which will be held in Northern Ireland and Romania, the final tournament is going to have 16 teams that will play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    This means that there will be 4 groups of 4 teams and every team will play against other group members once.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    From there, the top two teams in the group are going to advance into the quarter-finals and then the semi finals and then the finals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    In this championship, there is no third place match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The tournament always takes place in July and it lasts until about 2-3 weeks and it is conducted just after the U-17 league is over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The biggest reward is qualifying for the U-20 World Cup.<\/b><\/h3>\n

    At least 5 teams are going to take part in the FIFA U-20 World Cup and 6 if Europe is given a wildcard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The five teams that get to the semi-finals will qualify to play for the U-20 World Cup and if one of the host nations for the U-20 World CUp is in Europe, then there will be six teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The fact that there is the chance to qualify for the World Cup means that the U-19 championship makes it a life and death situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
