Depositing also has the downside of heightened emotions and influences. This results in a biased rationality or overly optimistic view of their supported club.

Football is not just a sport. For fans, it is a lifestyle. A winning streak is a personal achievement but a single loss can cause agitation for the day. This explains the frequency of sending biased predictions and bets in favour of the team supported.

There is a reasonable assumption that highly supportive and very passionate fans have all the facts and data about the team. They have viewed every single game that has existed about the team and have been updated all the time on the news and everything concerning the team and probably the coaches, too. However, there is another side of the coin and it is to be considered.

Emotions Often Beat Logic

The major reason of team biased predictions and bets is emotions that come into play. Fans often want to wish that the team is playing better than the facts which suggests the opposite. The belief is that hope wins all.

An example is a game Real Madrid has against a smaller club in La Liga. Several Madrid fans are wagering with the assumption that the team will win easily. However the facts, which are often complex, can indicate the opposite. The team could be worn after the schedule and played Champions League games. There could be injuries over other important matches and players.

These types of risks are often ignored by loyal fans, however, can be rationally identified by a neutral fan.

Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek and remember facts that support existing beliefs and ignore contradictory facts. This is common with football.

Fans Remember the Good Moments

We all remember the wins. Those decisive moments stick in our mind compared to the uninspiring draws and the devastating losses.

A fan of Brazil is likely to remember the stars, goals, and glory of their World Cup wins. They will most likely forget the disappointing and loss-filled tournaments. This ends up creating a positive bias over the years.

Just like Brazil, the wins in 2014 World Cup led to Germany being a World Cup favourite for the following years. This was understandable, however, football is an unpredictable sport. By 2018 Germany did not even make it out of the group stages. This hurt a lot of the fans that were judging the team on older wins and not on their present performance.

The same can be said for football clubs. A club can be a powerhouse for a certain period, but after a gap of a few years, fans should not expect the same power.

The “Special Team” Myth

Fans even think their club is the best. They think their clubs can go harder, longer, and stronger compared to all the other clubs.

Sometimes, comebacks are part of real life. Manchester United fans have the 1999 Champions League final embedded in their memory. In a game where United came back from one goal down by scoring two goals during injury time, they beat Bayern Munich. It was undeniably one of the greatest comebacks in football history.

However, having one great comeback does not guarantee that there will always be a great comeback. Fans may think that there will always be a comeback because they have won a comeback before. This, in a way, may be true. However, the odds of a comeback are still always very slim.

This is where the odds can become a false pattern.

Big Stars Can Mislead Fans

Famous players also affect how fans judge a team. After a club signs a good player, fans seem to think that the club will be successful soon.

This can be exemplified by Cristiano Ronaldo’s time at Juventus. Once Juventus signed Ronaldo, many fans thought that Juventus would easily win the Champions League. While many think that Ronaldo’s footballing genius would take Juventus to the Champions League, the best players cannot fix a flawed team.

This is also true of Messi’s time at PSG. With the attacking PSG of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe, many fans thought that PSG would easily win the Champions League. However, football is not that easy. Structures, defences, and calm players are also a requirement for a successful team in football.

While a superstar player may greatly improve a team, they will not win a guarantee success for a team.

Why This Matters in Predictions

Fans lack awareness of their self-involved predictions and think they are being logical. They are typically mixing facts and wishful thinking.

Let’s assume a Liverpool fan is predicting results for an upcoming match against Arsenal. Instead of evaluating the team’s situation by looking at things like recent stats (form), the match preparations (tactics), or injury updates (lineup), the fan will probably think of all Liverpool’s past memorable wins at home (Anfield) or all the past memorable high-pressure matches Liverpool has won.

This leads to the fan predicting the desired result of a Liverpool win, so the prediction is actually a wish.

Many of this wishful thinking happens when fans place bets. A Liverpool fan will probably view betting on the match’s result as betting on Liverpool, not because the odds are fair, but because the fan actually believes Liverpool will win (and there is no doubt), and that’s not an analysis of the situation. It’s football in the soul.

Even Experts Can Be Biased

This problem is not limited to fans in the stands watching the match. It also includes all the fans on the pundit roster and all the fans behind the commentator desks.

A club legend is a biased fan for life and eternally a Liverpool fan. He is probably thinking of the past and wishing that the new players are actually better, or that the coach has improved and therefore he is expecting a ‘big club reaction’ for a one-off bad spell of losses.

As you can see, bias is a mix of experience and a very strong bond, and that’s why some of the predictions of these very knowledgeable, footballing experts actually sound more like support, and less like analysis.

How to Be More Objective

There’s no reason for fans to stop supporting their teams. Football is an emotional sport. Without the passion, the game wouldn’t be as great.

There are a few ways to make more objective judgements.

When thinking about a team, first, take into account their recent form, not just their name. Look for injuries and suspensions. Think about the teams upcoming schedule. The team could be tired and struggle to win, even if they are playing a team considered to be inferior. Think about the difference between a teams home and away situations. Some teams look completely different when they have to leave their home stadium.

There is one question that is helpful. “Would I make the same prediction if this were not my team?” Answering this question can provide facts that should be considered.

Final Thoughts

It is not a lack of intelligence that causes fans to overrate their teams, but rather their passion. Supporters are often blinded by love, allowing fans to see their teams as more courageous and more likely to win than reality.

There are big examples in World Football. Losing to a team of unknowns. Failing with a team of stars. Losing as the defending champions. Letting supporters down.

This is the reason people love the sport. At the end of the day, belief and memories do not win the match. The game is won by the team that performs the best.

Predicting match results is part of the game for fans, and first deposit bonus make that betting experience even better.
