The Simba Yanga derby is well known to extend beyond the ninety minutes on the pitch. In fact, the build-up to the game dominates conversations in Dar es Salaam for days. It is part social and part footballing ritual. The supporters follow the derby beyond the stadium, on the trains, buses, minibuses, taxis, matatus and pedestrianly through the streets of Dar es Salaam. It is for this reason that the Sport 888STARZ app gives you all the action of the sports world, but the derby is owned by the supporters.

How the Rivalry Became Bigger Than Ninety Minutes

The Simba-Yanga rivalry is anchored in legacy, tradition and memories. It has shaped generations, and the derby results transcend time. They exist in the memories of supporters long after the season is over. It shapes who supports which club within families, and in schools and workplaces.

The derby is part of the fabric of Tanzanian culture and exists way beyond the ninety minutes of play. Results can shape the mood for days or weeks, and the memories can be generations old. It is a constant, and newer supporters create their own memories to pass on to the next generation.

What Supporters Wear, Sing and Share Before Kick-Off

Fans of both teams make the build-up to the game spectacular. At the stadium and surrounding areas, you will see visible support for the clubs in shirts, scarfs and flags. Chants are passed on from supporter groups. Before kick-off, many supporters post short videos, gifs and pictures on their socials to show their support.

The Benjamin Mkapa stadium provides a visual contrast of the two supporter bases. Prior to and after the game, supporters create their own activities in selected gathering points.

Tanzanian supporters love using humor before a match. Predictions and old clips are posted. Memes are shared to poke fun at the opposing side. People try to show confidence and boost their side through socials.

The Tactical and Player Stories Fans Debate Most

Fans agree the derby is an emotional game, but what happens off the field during the build-up is just as interesting. Things like team selection make or break a game. For example, deciding to press high or protecting midfield are a couple of things that can influence the game greatly. So can selection in transition. A formation with a defensive midfielder covering central players makes the gameplay different from an attacking full back.

All these are heavily debated by supporters and lead to post match disagreements on why a certain player was substituted or why a manager made a particular selection.

How Cafés, Radio and Mobile Updates Connect the Country

How Tanzanians follow football goes beyond the stadium. Radio reaches supporters who are working, traveling or living far from the game. Cafés and watching spots help bring people together, especially if the game being played is a local derby, which attracts supporters who do not attend every league game.

Additionally, mobile updates have recently become an added benefit. You can catch lineups, live scores, game highlights, or other post-game clips, even if you do not have time to watch the game in its entirety. With all these different avenues, following the derby has become a national affair, especially if you live outside of Dar es Salaam.

Why Respect Matters in a Rivalry This Intense

A rivalry becomes more competitive when it remains civil. Teasing and taunting is part of the culture; however, harassing or inflicting pain on your opposition fans crosses a line. Reporting a match where rules are broken is better than reporting a match where violence has occurred. Thankfully, there are mechanisms in place to control the behavior of both players and fans.

The media and supporter groups can also help change the culture by advocating for rules and measures that help strengthen the integrity of the competition.

How the Derby Can Welcome a New Generation

The next generation will engage with the Simba-Yanga derby in a different way. For young people, their first engagement with football will probably be through digital clips on mobile phones, and they will probably attend live matches later on in life.

This doesn’t take away from the derby; it changes how we access it. It is entirely possible that children will first see a football player through an Instagram post, then watch the derby with their parents, before following the league games regularly.

Clubs can capitalise on this through digital content and a reworked, simplified presentation of their history. School and other community-based activities can merge support for a particular club with actual participation in the sport.

Offline, the derby retains its strengths of colours, chants, radio voices, tactics and communities. These will keep the derby alive for many generations.
